Samba Drum Straps

Samba Drum Straps Samba drum straps - belt straps, shoulder straps, padded straps, surdo slings for all samba school instruments and for marching bands. Our padded and plain nylon shoulder straps are the ones used in the Rio samba schools All our drum straps and slings are fully adjustable and machine washable.

In Rio samba, drums are worn with shoulder straps, which allow the drum to hang at an angle and slightly to the side, making it easier to walk with. The arm can swing further, reducing the force required to hit the drum, and the shoulders can relax. In other styles of Brazilian percussion such as samba reggae, waist harnesses are preferred.

See below for double shoulder harnesses.

TDSounds does not sell double shoulder harnesses. Although they spread the weight of the drum evenly across both shoulders, the full weight of the drum is still borne by the lower back. With most double harnesses the drum is held in a horizontal position at the waist, forcing the shoulders up and back when playing and causing tension in the shoulders and wrists. The drum hits painfully against both shins whilst walking. Tension in the shoulders and wrists can lead to conditions like tendonitis, an old enemy of the samba drummer.

Shoulder straps allow both the wrists and shoulders to relax. You can wear the drum low down and to the side. Your arm will lengthen, your wrists straighten and your shoulder relaxes and comes down. And worn like this, a big surdo doesn't bounce as much against the shins.

If your concern is lower back pain then belt straps, if worn low around the pelvis, will completely remove the weight of the drum from the spine. You can still wear the drum low and slightly to the side with a waist strap, allowing the shoulders to relax and the wrists to be relatively straight whilst playing, reducing tension.
