The cavaquinho or cavaco is a small four stringed instrument simlar to a eukalele. In Brazilian samba schools it provides the melody of samba. Cavaquinhos are also used in pagode and other traditional Brazilian music. The cavaco's high tinkling tones cut right across the percussion section of a samba band, although it needs amplification to do this.
