TDSounds preselects for you the best surdos available in Brazil, made by Artcelsior and King, and a range of budget Izzo surdos (official suppliers to the Sao Paulo samba schools). Artcelsior produces the most popular samba surdo drums in Rio, because of their light weight and mellow tones. We currently only sell aluminium surdos, as wooden ones are much more fragile (and expensive, as they need hard cases). Tdsounds sells traditional 60cm deep surdos as well as 50cm deep ones, and even shorter models. Our Brazilian surdo drums are usually sold with nylon skins but if you want hide skins just ask; the surdo will cost no more. There is more information about surdo drums below. There are basically 3 types of surdo, although each can be of different sizes and tuning, depending on the size and style of the bateria. The biggest surdo is called the primeiro, and the second largest is called the segunda. Both of these are also called Marcacao, because they mark the beat. The third surdo is smaller, and it cuts in between the beats of the two big drums with more complex rhythms. It is called a teirceiro (third) or a cutador (cutting surdo) As the surdos mark the beat and the time for the rest of the band, for if they make an error, the whole musical performance is in danger.
