The tan tan is a Brazilian hand drum much used in Pagode and small samba bands. It has a drum head at one end only and the body can be tapered or straight.

Tantans are rarely used in big samba baterias as they are not loud enough, also as they are played in a sitting position with the drum across the lap, they are not marching drums. TDS sells metal tan-tans made by Artcelsior and King in Rio de Janeiro as they are much more durable, but we can source a wide variety of tan-tans on request.

The tantan takes the role of the big surdo drum in pagode and small samba group settings, holding and elaborating on the basic beat. The drum head is played with one hand whilst the metal body of the instrument is tapped by the other.
