Zabumbas are also important traditional instruments in Bumba Meu Boi, and Baiao. Traditionally this instrument was wooden, with hide skins held taut by ropes. Modern Zabumbas can be wood or metal and can have metal tuning systems. Both sides of the Zabumba are played at the same time, the top side with a beater and the underside with a stick.
