Music book giving the instrumental patterns and arrangements of the instruments and baterias of the Rio samba
schools, in musical notation. Co - written by one of the great modern
masters of the Rio samba percussion sections.
"Learning to play the Rio beat"
This book is written by the Rio music academic Guilherme Goncalves
and Mestre Odilon Costa who was mestre de Bateria (band master) of
the Rio Samba School Grande Rio for ten years.
It explains how to play the rhythms of the samba schols of Rio de Janeiro.
There are sections on all the usual bateria instruments , as well as explanations and orchestrations of the modern styles of the main samba schools in Rio.
This book gives many notated patterns, orchestrations and breaks, but as the book explains, it cannot show the special rio samba swing as this cannot be explained through musical notation. I would recommend this book to people who already have a copy of the DVD "In the Heart of Rio's baterias", where you can see the same patterns and rhythms being demonstrated in videoand audio, with the true samba swing. The book is a good companion to the DVD as it give more detailed notation than you will find there.
Another way get that rio swing is to listen to authentic samba audio material s
uch as samba CDs, which will complement this book nicely.
