Top quality 16 inch cow hide surdo skin mounted and ready to use. Made by Artcelsior or King in Rio d Janeiro, this hide surdo head will fit any make of Brazilian 16" samba surdo drum. Please note that these skins will warp if stored off a drum. This is normal - and good for the skin. (see below). If you buy a skin and it doesn't fit onto the drum, soak it in water for a couple of hours and it will regain its shape. Fit your hide surdo skin on the drum whilst damp, replace the hoops, but do not tighten the nuts much. The wooden ring will mould to the shape of your drum whilst drying. Once thoroughly dry, tune the drum

Leather will expand and contract in response to changes in atmospheric humidity but it does not expand or contract evenly. A wooden hoop will change shape according to the pressure of the skin, so that the tension remains even on all parts of the skin. A metal hoop will hold its shape so it is the skin that has to stretch unevenly, and stress will occur in the hide which can lead to a shorter skin life.
