The package contains a DVD with a documentary (English) and teaching course, (French with English subtitles), and an accompanying book(French and English) The DVD is in PAL format*.
On The DVD is
1. A documentary film "Bateria" by Bruno Gineste 68 minutes
In the heart of the rehearsals of five Rio samba schools, including their parades in Rio in Carnaval 2001. The film also includes detailed footage from the Artcelsior factory, the main supplier of instruments to the Rio Samba Schools, (and to Traditional Sounds of Samba Ltd!) and includes comment on the broader social context
For people who have not visited Rio samba school rehearsals, this film is full of unique footage which shows with no gloss, the atmosphere and context from which this music arises.
2. A course in Rio bateria percussion by Jean Christophe Jacquin 1 hour 15 min
The rhythmical phrases and playing techniques of the instruments of the Rio Samba Schools. The course is taught by Jean Christophe Jacquin, who has participated in Rio's carnival since 1990. His teaching method is based on know-how inherited from an oral tradition; you don't need to be able to read music to get the full benefit of his accurate and detailed explanations, though there are musical notations too.
The material covers all of the bateria instruments, and the main styles of playing them
3. A book containing a thorough background to the Rio Carnival, notes to accompany the teaching material (including detailed musicial notation), a photo gallery, glossary, discography and details of the samba schools filmed in the documentary.
* PAL is the standard European format, however these DVDs will work on some DVD players outside Europe and also on computer DVD readers.
