Airto Morera Essential: The Very Best of Airto Moreira Nascente Records, 1999   Pat Selden Airto's taken time out over the years from his international career as jazz-demon and uber-hippy to record some belting traditional grooves - and most of them are on this CD: "Celebration Suite", "Samba de Flora", "Happy People" etc.../they're all here. Very easy to get hold of. (Pat Selden)
Alceu Valenca Forro de Todos os Tempos Oasis 759.101/2-490224   Brazil Giselle I wasn't a forro fan until I heard this one. Great variety and interest using mostly the traditional instrumentation and staying firmly within the bounds of forro. But primarily it's a great fun CD bound to lift your spirits every time you hear it. (Giselle)

Bebel Gilberto TantoTempo Six degrees 657036 1026-2 2000   Carl S A romantic and edgy gem from the hip, NYC based daughter of Juao and step-mom Astrud. Produced by the late, great Suba, it's a cool fusion of a sweet Bossa voice, a hip back-band with attitude, and smart production incorporating touches of hip-hop and electronica. Brief liner notes but no lyric notes. (Carlinhos)
Beth Carvalho Live at the Olympia       Camões Beth Carvalho is the queen of samba. She's "godmother" of fundo de quintal, Zeca Pagodinho, Dudu Nobre, Toque de prima etc. She showed to the world the sambas of Cartola and mainly Nelson Cavaquinho. This CD I believe is +/- 1990, is live at the Brazilian Olympia (S. Paulo)and its wonderful. The musicians includes Wanderson Martins (cavaco), Neco and Bororó (violão), Gordinho (surdo), Marcelinho Moreira (repique de mão),Arlindo Cruz (banjo), etc. The Show starts with "Andanças" her first hit. It has great sambas from Cartola (as rosas não falam), Nelson Cavaquinho (folhas secas), Gonzaguinha (o que é, o que é), Noel Rosa (último desejo), Martinho da vila, Chico Buarque (meu guri). The second half of the CD has a lot of samba de roda and partido alto. A must have! (Camões)
Beth Carvalho Beth Carvalho canta o samba de Sao Paulo (live)       Camões This CD has only sambas from S.Paulo composers and S. Paulo musicians. Oswaldinho da Cuica (some of you knew him in Amsterdam last year) is one of the musicians and show why is has cuica on his name. Great sambas from Paulo Vanzolini, Adoniran Barbosa, etc, etc. The ambiance is smooth and delicious. More info in www.bethcarvalho.com.br . This year she recorded another live "Pagode de mesa". Its the 30 years career CD. Like the name says is really a pagode. First league sambas, musicians and audience. Very nice to hear Marcelinho ripping the repique de mão. (Camões)
Bezzera da Silva Bezzera da Silva ao vivo (live)       Camões Bezerra is the voice from the favelas. All his sambas are related to "morro" problems, the lack of education, living conditions, drugs, violence. We can call it "gangstasamba". The lyrics are always really funny with lots of double meanings. This CD is the latest one, live, and it was recorded in the quadra of GRES Academicos da Rocinha, in Rocinha favela. It's a great CD, with really good musicians, really good sambas, and really good swing. Most people say that Bezerra, with Dicró, is the last of the Malandros alive. (Camões)

Caetano Veloso Livros       Dave A, Pedro *This is a wonderful record by Caetano. At 50 something, you gotta take your hat off for this Brazilian icon for coming up with such a cutting edge album (at the time). This disk has a distinct sound, with some great percussion, specially a fine tuned timba ensemble on several tracks (Carlinhos Brown participated). Also you get the great arrangements form Jaques Morelenbaum who produces most of the stuff for Caetano. There is also a live version "Prenda Minha" (Polygram 538 583-2) with some additional songs, so its worth having both. (Pedro) *Caetano GRAMMYwinning record (won the prize 2000) in some parts experimental, in some parts good old brazilian music like "No baixa de sapateiro" de Ari Barroso. (Lennart)

Candeia Axé!       Camões Candeia was the biggest afro-Brazilian defender. He was founder of Portela and after several discussions he founded "Quilombo" a samba school more linked to the afro and carnival traditions than the commercial stuff. 1996 Brazil Carl S, Dave A, Erhard, pedro *This is a great "high-concept" type album. A fabulous production that takes you through up, and down-tempo tracks on a masterfully-modulated sonic journey from start to finish. Mixed English or Portuguese lyric notations. (Carlinhos)

* Carlinhos Brown is undoubtedly one of top Brazilian producers of today. I like this album a lot (the following one was a disappointment for me), as it has some great songs, with real powerful percussion. Check out "Bog La Bag", and try to keep still while listening to it. (Pedro)

Carlinhos do Repique Fantastica Nota 10 Brasileira Polygram do Brasil Ltda - tape 1991   Pat Straight ahead batucada from Little Charlie and his eight chums. He's the composer of classics like "sala de recepção", "sempre mangueira" and "as rosas não falam" voted one of the top 5 Brazilian songs ever. This CD is one of the two he recorded in his last years and is fundamental for samba knowledge. (Camões)

A collection of historic, bluesy, sultry, and laid-back sambas from a great master. No liner or lyric notes (Carlinhos)

Cartola wrote some of the most beautiful popular songs ever recorded anywhere, although he didn't get to make his first commercial recording under his own name until 1974, when he was 66. ' (Giselle)

Giselle

(Featuring Lenine and Lanny Gordin) This record is basically just 'voz e violão' (voice and guitar) but Chico César has such a percussive control of this interaction, that he creates some highly syncopated patterns between the right hand rhythms and his vocal interpretation. You wont believe its just a guitar doing all that stuff! This album also features some of Chico's best known songs , like "Mama Africa", in a truly remarkable performance, so I think its well worth a listen. (Pedro)

Stunning. His first CD I think. Truly original and beautiful to listen to. Aos Vivos is not samba but its vey afro brazilian in soul, and it's full of soul, as well as being both very simple and astonishingly clever. His newest one, 'Mama Mundi', is nearly as good. (Giselle)

Clara Nunes O Canto da Guerreira" EMI 364 792177 2   Brazil Giselle All time fave from the queen of samba. I first heard this coming out of someone's house in Rio- it was so good I knocked on the door and asked what it was, and so was introduced to the work of the great Clara Nunes. I'd heard some of it before but hadn't known who the singer was - hear these songs once and you wont forget them either. Songs like E Baiana and Ilu Aye get the full bateria treatment, others are quieter. (Giselle)

Daniela Mercury Música de Rua - ???       Pedro Daniela is perhaps the greatest exponent of bahian axé music, keeping standards of quality (as opposed to pure comerciallism) in all her records. Furthermore, her charisma, sweetness and energy, are reason alone to buy her records (oh, and did I mention she's cute too?). This particular album is one of my favorites, with great songs like "Musica de rua", "O reggae e o mar" and "Por amor ao Ilê". If you like Daniela, this album is a sure bet. Alternatively, check the live one "Electrica" (???) that has most of her hits recorded live. (Pedro)

Djavan Luz CBS, Sonymusic 746.544/2-490177 1982   Pedro If you aren't familiar with this great brazillian composer, or if you only know the more comercial stuff, there you're missing a lot. You cant go much further in melodic emotion than Djavan's songs. I love him for being so pure, and I envy his devotion to music. His songs are emotions made music. For a great introduction album, I recomend "Luz", but you can try and find some of these excellent albums: "Djavan" (1989, CBS featuring the wonderful "Oceano") or "Não é azul mas é mar" (1987, CBS). Or just forget all this and buy whatever you find from him. Lately he has published a live album "Ao vivo" (2xCD EPIC 2-492473 Sony Music Brasil), and Almir Chediak published his songbook. Chediak has been publishing a number of songbooks, with staff, lyrics and guitar chords, form most of the brazillian MPB composers (they are published by Editora Lumiar) In addition to Djavan's songbook, there are three CD's, with versions of his best known songs made by a number of brazillian musicians (Lumiar Discos 108.440, 108.441 and 108.442). This musical Songbook is a great chance to get aquainted with his work, as well as being excellent quality material. Buy all three! (Pedro)

Elis Regina Live In Montreux (featuring Hermeto Pascoal West

Wind / Latina - 2226

1979   Pedro This is perhaps my fave brazillian recording of all times. It was recorded short before Elis died, and shows her and her supporting band at their best. The band was just fantastic: César Mariano at the keyboards, Helio Delmiro at the guitar, Luisão at the bass, Paulinho Braga on drums and Chico Batera on percussion. The song selection is great and the last three tracks are just performed by divine Elis and Hermeto Pascoal at the piano (he didnt get his pig, that night). The whole album is sheer magic, and it deserves a place in every brazillian music enthusiastic's shelf. Go buy it now. Other Elis' albums that deserve attention are Elis (1972 Polygram do Brasil / Verve 836 009-2), and Vento de Maio (Hemisphere 7243 8 23503 2 3 or EMI 364 748212 2). (Pedro)

I've never heard a better pure samba recording. They even have real songs (for instance track 6 has this great 'rim shot' melody on the Repiniques). Anyway, this CD must have been part of some stupid Marketing strategy, cause the 1st track is some kind of really awful cheesy anthem, perhaps supposed to sell it (go figure). Don't EVER inadvertantly play this 1st track!!!! apart from it, its just 'môlho' (juice).

Papete Berimbau e Percussao Universal Sound USCD7 1997 Brasil Nigel H, Dave A The write up places him as one of the great Brazilian percussionists, and very influential in Brazil in the seventies when most of this was recorded. It is relatively low key and folky in places, although he covers just about all the different rhythmic bases sometimes they are short pieces (particularly the purely percussive) and sometimes overlain with songs that are redolent of early seventies (and Jaques Brel to my ears). This CD is a show with Beth Carvalho, D. Ivone Lara, Moacyr Luz, Walter Alfaiate, Luiz Carlos da Vila, João Nogueira and Nelson Sargento. The musicians are "state of art". The ambiance is very good, the sambas also. It was João Nogueira's last recording before he died. (Camões)

*This power-house treatment of new style and traditional Brazilian songs with a broad range of tempos and intensity opened a lot of us up in the NW-USA to the possibilities of Brazilian "fusion". It's Grammy winning (yes/no?) legacy is still with us in hot material covered by some local bands. The most comprehensive basic introduction to Brasilian music I know, from Carmen Miranda to Joao Gilberto to pagode and samba reggae. If you can only afford one CD, buy "Carnaval." It gives a great overview, including cuts from

most of the big Rio samba schools and a bloco-afro or two thrown in for good measure. (Erhard)

Various artists Viva Brasil! NASCENTE CD: NSCD 037 1998 1998   Mally Mixing the sounds of samba with the sounds of another great Brazilian passion, football, from Maracana and Morumba stadiums (OK, stadia). The tracks are a mixture of traditional and (very) contemporary samba, and there's some great moments, including one where a very straight drumkit intro leads into a fantastic samba groove. Really makes you appreciate the difference between the straight rhythm and the groove - worth getting the CD just for this! (Mally)
Various Artists Afro Samba       Mike A reasonable selection of Samba Reggae and Afoxes. Opens with Margareth Menezes version of Ele Gibo (spelling dubious) which is a great song to a samba reggae beat if you can get past the dreadful in your face electric keyboard sounds that Brazilians seem to love. (Mike M)
Various artists JACKSON DO PANDEIRO Revisto e Sampleado 1999 BMG 7432155241-2 1999   Pedro This CD isnt from Jackson do Pandeiro, but instead its a revision on his works, by the hand of several contemporary brazillian musicians. Nevertheless its very enjoyable, with great versions of his songs. I particularly like the version of "Chiclete com Banana" by Gal Costa (boy, can she sing...), and the version of "Cremilda" buy The Funk Fuckers (featuring the explendid Marcos Suzano raving on the pandeiro. You also have two great songs by Lenine ("Jack Soul Brasileiro" from his last album, and "Sebastiana"), but the whole CD Is good. (Pedro)
Various artists Cores do Brasil - Samba Nascente     Pedro This is a pretty well known and easy to find series of compilations, with themes like bossanova, voices, samba, etc. The quality is always good, so I think theyre good value for money. (Jim F) *'Fabulously energetic collection of batucada grooves, check out track 5, 'Otao E Eu' with amazing berimbau and caixa solos' (Simeon) *This is a fabulously clear and clean recording while still sounding like there's a hell of a party going on. Very easy to hear the different elements of the rhythms while at the same time capturing the bateria ensemble effect. Solo instruments stand out just enough from the mix that they don't get lost and their contribution can be appreciated. Contains the classic batucada cues, breaks and grooves, plus short sections with various instruments playing solo, so that their sound, rhythm and style can be appreciated on their own. Great playing and a great mix. Very good introduction to batucada.' (Mally) *not baterias per se but fantastic (Nigel)

Patota de Cosme ASN B00000G96K 1998   Camões Zeca is the greatest samba singer alive. He started in "Cacique de Ramos" and Beth Carvalho helped him a lot. This CD is the 2nd or 3rd of his career and I love it. Its a CD with few electronic instruments. It has great guests. I have almost all Zeca's CDs and this is the one I prefer. Last year he recorded "Zeca Pagodinho ao vivo". Its a live CD, really easy to find, with an excellent line up. Only great sambas. The live CD was the last with Dudu Nobre as cavaco player. Dudu Nobre (www.dudunobre.com.br) is the new (traditional) samba star. He's 23, one CD (FEliz da vida) and hundreds of sambas sang by others. All the majors singers and groups recorded sambas from Dudu. (Camões)
