Samba School technical rehearsals in the Sambodromo

(see below for schedule).

This year (winter 2009 – 2010) the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro will be having technical rehearsals in the sambodromo, from the end of November to the end of January. These happen in the evening.

These technical rehearsals involve the whole samba school parading down the Avenida, with their groups of dancers and drum bateria and song, but without floats or costumes. These free rehearsals have become very popular. It’s great to be surrounded by genuine local fans who know the songs, but if you want a big show, wait until carnival!

The rehearsals stop for Xmas and new year. The final rehearsal is also the test of sound and light just before carnaval, traditionally carried out by the school which won in the previous year. This time it’s Salgueiro.

This year the groups in the second league of samba schools are also in the official technical rehearsal diary; they are generally the first school to parade in a night.

Please note that all timings and dates are subject to change, but barring major catastrophies or torrential rain and flooding there should be rehearsals on the nights shown below.
