SAMBA SCHOOLS (and REHEARSALS)

Each samba school has a quadra - a rehearsal space where rehearsals are held. Some rehearsals (ensaios) are open to the public, and an entrance fee is charged. These sessions provide an important part of each samba schools' income, as well as an opportunity to perfect their music and dance before carnaval.

This list contains the dates and venues of the public rehearsals of the grupo especial samba schools in Rio de Janeiro. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays expect to pay an entrance fee of between R$5 and R$40. We've added the websites of some schools in the access groups, too.

We recommend that you travel to these venues by taxi. There are usually plenty of taxis waiting outside to take you home after the event. Rehearsals may pause over the Xmas and New Year period, so check before you go.

If you want to visit a samba school that isn't miles out of town, try Mangueira, Salgueiro, Sao Clemente, Estacio de Sa, Unidos da Tijuca or Vila Isabel.
